2017 Cordillera Blanca, Peru
The Cordillera Blanca (Spanish for "white range") is a mountain range in Peru that is part of the larger Andes range and extends for 200 kilometres in a northwesterly direction. It includes several peaks over 6,000 metres high and 722 individual glaciers. The highest mountain in Peru, Huascarán, at 6,768 metres high, is located there. From Huaraz you can reach the following hikes.
Laguna Churup. The Churup Lake route starts in the little village called Pitec, located just before the entry to the Huascaran National Park. In the middle of the route, you will find a fixed rope to pull yourself up, when the path gets more narrow and steep. If you just arrived to Huaraz, it is a great acclimatization hike. Altitude: 4450m
Laguna 69 is among main reasons people visit Huaraz, with its shimmering crystal blue water that lies in front of the snow-capped Pisco Peak. The best way to reach it is by taking a tour, which will stop at the turquoise Chinancocha glacial lake on the way. You will trek from 3,800m to 4,600m, which can be quite challenging for those not used to high altitudes.
Santa Cruz Trek. The 50km trek takes 3 or 4 days through the heart of Peru’s incredible Cordillera Blanca mountain range. During the trip, you will see the well-known stunning mountain peaks like Llamacorral, Taullipampa, Paria, Punta Unión. The route filled with turquoise colored lagoons, mountain passes and unique nights at open air in the middle of alpine scenery attracts many visitors in Huaraz. Altitude: 3760m – 4750m
